Gillian Grant
Gillian Grant has acted as a legal, regulatory and policy advisor to the Canadian government since 2002. She is currently posted to Canada’s embassy in Washington, D.C. as the Transportation Counsellor. From 2017-2022 she served as Canada’s Alternate Representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, U.K. In this capacity she negotiated international agreements, advised Canadian delegations to the IMO and related organizations and acted as a liaison between these organizations and the Canadian government. While in London, she was elected to serve as Chair of the IMO’s Legal Committee a role she continues in her new position.
Gillian is a qualified barrister and solicitor with degrees in Arts, Law and Public Administration. She began her legal career as law clerk to Mr. Justice Rothstein then a member of Canada’s Federal Court of Appeal. Subsequently, she joined the Canadian Justice department where she worked as Counsel to the Correctional Service of Canada; Counsel and Special Advisor to the Assistant Deputy Minister Public Law and, Senior and later General Counsel to Transport Canada specializing in maritime law. In these capacities she has advised senior Canadian officials on the legal aspects of their mandates, developed legislation and regulations, and appeared in front of multiple Parliamentary committees.
